So my PIMO Younger Brother Tried To Kill Himself Today
by pale.emperor inwe all know that this cult will drive those trying to leave to desperate measures, and today by brother was very nearly one of those statistics.
he slashed his thigh with a kitchen knife and was bleeding out until he called the police.. i got a call on my way home from work from a police officer, coincidentally it was one of my old friends from school who's now a cop.
he told me my brother is in hospital after an attempted suicide and has lost some blood but will be ok. but i should get to the hospital as he's asking for me.

pale.emperor:
It was the the mock virtuoso but tepid guitar playing (which sent the fake audience into raptures) of the "brother" that, strangely, made me recall Crossroads. -- CC
Yeah, emperor -- I just now posted the above on the Steve Vai thread, but I was not so charitable. Perhaps I am wrong. I was just so put off by the whole thing that I didn't give the soloist his due.
Oh, just saw the "half decent"! All right, then!

Dueling Guitars: Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio
by compound complex ingreetings, lovers of both the sacred and the profane!.
i posted on the gilead song thread, where a tune of unimpeachable wholesomeness was wafting through the fetid air of my chamber.
if you can get through the annoying vehicle ad, the famous scene from the film crossroads will turn you off forever to saccharine, gagacious music.. happy listening .

Difficult to internalize that all the connections are gone
by truthseeker ini was in my old stomping ground a couple of months ago and happened to be walking past the home of an old family friend.
word is in the hall that i used to go to is that "i am one of them" meaning apostate.
no one from my old hall has contacted me to find out what happened.

I started reaching out to my mom JW family and it has been great getting to know them after all this time. -- truthseeker
What's ironic, truthseeker, is that for many of us the non-JW family welcomes us back, and this despite many years with little or no contact. Apart from the typical dysfunction of any family, the unreasonable control over your associates as a JW just doesn't exist in "normal" families.
Continue reaching out. Family matters, even if it's long-lost or "new" family.

I desperately want to put up the dueling guitars of Ralph Macchio and Steve Vai -- Crossroads -- but I would be highjacking this thread, as well as profaning the sacred with ol' Scratch, who has no place here . . .
Or, does he?

Pull the Plug Already...
by megaboy inafter reading and seeing so many detailings of the dealings with people in this religion, i have to wonder how to get people who are just extremely asleep.
reasoning doesn't seem like it works, there needs to be some kind of plug pull event, like the leaders doing something so uterly stupid that it causes the immediate downfall of the entire religion.
but because i am naturally curious i want to know from people who have more experience with jw structure why they seem to have a resistance to an event like this?

As to the original meaning of "cult":
The term "cult" first appeared in English in 1617, derived from the French culte, meaning "worship" which in turn originated from the Latin word cultus meaning "care, cultivation, worship". The meaning "devotion to a person or thing" is from 1829. Starting about 1920, "cult" acquired an additional six or more positive and negative definitions. [bold added]

The Black Death is usually associated with Europe and the period 1346-1350 but it neither began nor ended then. The earliest records of this pestilence are in China. In 46 AD an epidemic in Mongolia killed two-thirds of the population. In 312 northern and central China became a wasteland and in the province of Shensi, only one or two out of 100 taxpayers survived. In 468, 140,000 people died in the Chinese cities of Honan, Hopei, Shantung and others. During the next 900 years this pestilence traveled slowly throughout China and the Middle East though major outbreaks were not common.
